SITTING

In the sitting position it is sometimes possible to use the post rest without supporting the elbows on the knees, but this technique should not be emphasized because the support of the knees on the elbows tends to stabilize the lateral motion of the torso.

In high grass or thin bush it is sometimes possible to seize a handful of vegetation in the left hand and pull up as the hand supports the rifle. I have used this technique twice in Africa—once on black wildebeest and once on buffalo—and while the range was not great in either case, the results were entirely to my satisfaction.

The integral bipod, either hooked onto the rifle after purchase or built into it by the manufacturer, is seen increasingly in the hunting field, and I have even noted it in the hands of domestic law enforcement organizations. It has its uses, though not always in actual shooting.
